Tips for a Trip to NYC

In a few weeks, I will be visiting New York City for the first time!  I got the best advice when I asked for tips for a Las Vegas vacation so I'm hoping to get lucky again!

via

Here's what I do know
I'm going with my husband and we are staying in a hotel near times square.  We will be there for about 6 days and part of the time I will need to find things to by myself.  I will want to do a lot of the standard site seeing; i.e. Central Park, Statue of Liberty, Time Square, etc.

What I need to know
  • What restaurants would you suggest?
  • What else do I need to see or do while in New York?
  • What is the best tip you could give someone before going to New York City for the first time?

Thank you so much for your help!!

XOXO

study the subway before you go and use it as often as possible - the metro card will be your best friend, it goes EVERYWHERE!
Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, you won't regret it. It's awesome to see the people and the city.
Spend some time, grab a bite, whatever, while in Brooklyn. It's amazing there!
If you like views from up high - I'd do the Top of The Rock (Rockefeller) Observation Deck. The view is amazing!

Then, while I haven't been, the 9-11 Memorial would be at the top of my list.

Have a great time, so jealous! My boyfriend and I are thinking about going next year to see the Twins play the Yankees :)

The first time I went we stayed in Times Square on the biggest shopping weekend of the year(first weekend in Dec.). IT.WAS.A.ZOO! I would never do that again.
I would suggest checking out the memorial at Ground Zero along with a show or a Yankees game!

I'm just coming back from NY myself! Didn't get to do too much exploring but when in NYC, you gotta eat pizza! I highly recommend Una Pizza Napoletana. IT IS DELISH! You will not regret it!

And for truck stop, can't go wrong with the halal guys at 53rd and 6th! I believe you're veg and they have those options too! I need to ask my partner in crime the other restaurant names that we loved and then I shall come back to add on! :) xo

I haven't been to NYC since 1998, so I'm not going to give you any specific tips. Lol.

I would just suggest eat LOCAL. Don't eat anywhere that is a chain. Try new foods. NYC is all about diversity and celebrating different ethnicities.

Have fun, lucky girl! xo

Go to Serendipity!!! It is ice cream heaven. But it is small so be ready for a wait. We were just there in June. Go shopping on 5th Ave...even if it is just window shopping. Go to a game...Yankees, Knicks, Jets...whatever is in season. Try the Stage deli for lunch...but split a sandwich, they are huge. Go on the subway once for the experience and then take cabs. The subway is nasty! Go to a broadway show. We loved Spiderman but the Book of Mormon is the show to see right now.

Well shoot. I am no help on this post at all. I've never been to NYC although it's on my list of places to visit. From the looks of the comments, you've gotten some great suggestions!

My great grandfather immigrated to NYC from Italy, and we have the papers from it. Therefore, it was important to me to see Ellis Island, where he became a US citizen.

You are going to LOVE New York :) I would definitely suggest shopping in Greenwich Village. It's off the beaten path, and you can find some fabulous finds for a great price!

I have been going to NYC for years, but honestly...the subway isn't very intimidating to me. I live in Smalltown, VA, remember, and I'm perfectly capable of getting around. There is a map on every subway train, so just listen for where you are and keep an eye out for how many stops until you get off.

Also, contrary to popular belief, New Yorkers are super nice. Just ask if you need directions, etc. Really :)

As far as what to see...the 9-11 Memorial would be on the top of my list. I was there on 9-11, but didn't go b/c I felt it was a day for families. But you MUST go. It's absolutely beautiful. AND...Centry 21 is almost right across for it. MORE great shopping!!!

You have to go EVERYWHERE. No joke. New York is one of my favorite cities and I so wish that I could get there more often. You must go to Union Square and Stand Burger (get the toasted marshmallow milkshake and thank me later). The Met is my favorite museum there for sure, and you HAVE to go shopping in SoHo!

I am from Europe, so I am not very helpful, but I have to say that I am really jealous because that's my favorite city in the world :)

I hate you. And by hate, I mean SUPER JEALOUS OF.
I want to go to NYC so badly. I could cry. Not really. Well, kind of. It seems like the perfect place for Bonnie. :)
Like your trip to Vegas, you better post all of your pictures and tell us all about it.

it's been a couple of years since i last went to new york, but i do remember loving the pretzels and roasted nuts, haha. ;)

definitely get pretzels in central park and get roasted nuts in times square. and of course, serendipity 3 is there -- frozen hot chocolate! they also have really good hotdogs. and we went to this little italian restaurant in manhattan, it was so good but unfortunately i can't remember the name. :/ i also ate fried ice cream when i went to new york. :)

i hope you have a fantastic time in new york!!!

My only advice is that you must prepared to walk FAST, and not at snail pace like a lot of tourists, because you will get yelled at and NYers will push you hard.

As for food: Pastrami sandwich at Katz Deli :D

Hope you have an amazing trip!

Sadly I have nothing to add: but I do want to know what you do!! The Chef went to CIA...let me know if you want any restaurant suggestions after you compile your list.

And have a blast!

you are so lucky! you will have so much fun!

i have only been once, and it was a LONG time ago. i LOVED all of the museums. i missed out on central park (DUMB), so i would check that out if i were you.

and this is cheesy, but we took a bus tour (very touristy) that gave a great view of the city and hit the highlights, and i kind of thought it was A FAB WAY to get an overview of the big city!

Oh this is a tough one! I suggest a ride on the FREE Staten Island Ferry -- it's the best way to see NYC's harbor. While in the borough grab a yummy bite to eat at Ruddy & Dean's steakhouse located across the street from the ferry terminal. In NYC proper I'd visit the Museum of the City of New York, the NYPL at 42nd Street, and the Cooper-Hewitt Museum. For food, I love the fresh baked muffins at Sarabeth's on the Upper East Side and seafood at The Water Club (which also overlooks NYC's waterways). If you feel like exploring Little Italy, a bite at Il Cortile is a must. Have fun! xo style, she wrote

I love hearing about first trips to NYC, you will love it!! I go often for work and spend most of my time in the SoHo neighborhood which I love for shopping and dining. I haven't been in a couple months so first on my list is 9/11 memorial. I know it's cliche tourist but I love the city view sites like the Empire State Building. My tip - comfy flats!

If you need somewhere to eat (at anytime of the day) - definitely check out Cafeteria on 17th & 7th. They're open 24 hours a day - serves breakfast almost all day, and has the best customer service!

I also recommend shopping in SoHo - (heart of it is Prince & Broadway)

Oh, and make sure you have alternative routes since the subways undergo construction during the weekends & may reroute.

The best thing you can do to prepare is use City Maps. It's a virtual map of NYC that shows the city block by block. Safe Travels.
